Conclusion

We are trying to create a culture that understands the damaging effect sarcasm can have on students who have yet to discover and celebrate who they are. We believe that in an attempt to be funny or make a point, the school staff may use sarcasm no differently than Maria's uncle did, and we believe the damage is just as great. We suggest that schools establish norms that limit the use of yelling, threatening, and sarcasm in adult-student interactions. It does nothing to establish trust, and it is very likely to cause significant pain. It will not establish a culture in which personal development is valued as a partner of educational success and helping students to find and be in their element. Inattentiveness can be equally damaging, as our rush to be heard ourselves can drown out the meaning students are attempting to convey through their words or actions. We cannot expect students to think about the future, create personal goals and achievement, find their passion, and appreciate their talents if their day is not formally structured beyond routinely demonstrating subject-matter competence. Pairing words and listening can make the power of "if" a reality. Developing identity, agency, and mindsets of achievement in students will help create a culture of achievement in your school. Choose your words wisely—they matter!
